Dance

Vision

As part of our unique Performing Arts curriculum at SMSJ, Dance aims to promote and harness our students' creativity. There is a strong focus on individuality by engaging our students in a variety of dance styles and choreographers that have been fundamental in the dance industry. The curriculum embeds opportunities for students to explore different dance styles, learn movements signature to those styles as well as building cultural and historical understandings of the professional works being studied. The curriculum also places a strong emphasis on choreographic methods to equip our students with the capacity to choreograph dance from their own ideas in engaging ways.

Alongside this our exciting Key Stage 3 Dance curriculum promotes fundamental life skills by promoting teamwork, resilience, appreciation and communication skills in an environment that enables our students to feel safe to learn whilst at the same time pushing the boundaries of their capabilities.

Our extensive super-curricular activities enrich our students experience as by offering many opportunities to perform events held at many prestigious venues. Our dance companies that are at residency at each site offer an opportunity to work each week to create choreography that is showcased at the Barnet Dance Competition, our own annual Evening of Dance and at the Arts Depot for the Barnet Dance festival. Alongside this is the work of our Dance Scholars who work closely with The Royal Academy of Dance performing at local events as well as at the Royal Festival Hall and Cadogan Hall. All this work enriches our curriculum time as their learning both in and out of the classroom provides a springboard of opportunity for our students to flourish.
