Key Stage Three - St Mary's and St John's CE School

Key Stage Three

At KS3, we continue to offer a broad and experiential KS3 curriculum, with an explicit focus on Oracy to develop students’ ability to speak confidently, appropriately and sensitively. The formal curriculum, which includes English, Maths, Science, Computer Studies, Geography, History, Religious Education, French, Spanish, Art, Design & Technology, Food, Oracy, Drama, Dance, Music,  Physical Education and PSHCEE, stimulates student’s curiosity and allows them to discover their passion and talent.

In Year 9 we offer a blended approach to GCSE courses with the core subjects delivering their curriculum over 3 years.  However, to enable students to develop the deep understanding needed to be successful in foundation subjects, they have a 3 year KS3 curriculum.

In the spring term of Year 9, as well as allowing the time for truly academically enriching activities, students are guided to choose the subjects for which they have a passion, not limited by predefined subject combinations.

Year 9 students have a term to review their choices and make changes where appropriate. This includes a core of Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, combined and separate Science, Religious Studies and Physical Education. They may then choose one of the following:

  • Art courses: Art (Fine Arts) Drama, Dance and Music

  • Humanities courses: History or Geography

  • Computing courses: Computing Studies and IT

  • Technology courses:Food Preparation & Nutrition and Design and Technology

  • Sports Studies course: PE
