At SMSJ Primary school children begin learning French (our chosen MFL) from Year 3.

Learning a foreign language provides an opening in to other cultures, fosters children's curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

Most of the work is completed orally initially with lots of opportunities for children to understand and respond to spoken language from a variety of sources.  As the children move through the years in KS2 they will begin to speak with increasing confidence and improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

Children will be encouraged to begin writing phrases, sentences and short paragraphs for a variety of different audiences.  They will also discover and develop an appreciation of a range of French literature.  In Years 5 and 6 children will be expected to produce short presentations in French.

We use many interactive resources to stimulate and inspire the children’s interest.  The lessons are very practical and children have plenty of opportunities to practise their speaking and listening skills in French through using drama, games and singing.
