Secondary phase welcome

Welcome to the Secondary phase of St Mary’s and St John’s CE School. This is an extremely exciting time for our school as develop into an all through school. Last year saw our first ever Year 7 cohort starting in our brand new facilities at Bennett House. This year our middle school site accommodates pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 & 8 affording us many opportunities for cross phase working, collaboration, leadership, buddying, sports competitions and many more.

I am extremely proud to be leading this wonderful school. Our strong learning community will develop and grow as we nurture and enable your children to have a curiosity for knowledge, creativity in their learning, develop into active and informed citizens, and above all be healthy and happy individuals who are spiritually-grounded and compassionate young people.

Years 5 – 8 are all delighted by the stunning facilities at Bennett House in our pioneering middle school model – the first of its type in Barnet. Pupils enjoy the space of the new building with its light and airy atrium which is at the centre of the school and a place for reading, researching, and reflecting and developing independent learning skills. They enjoy playing football and games in the gym, acting and dancing in a purpose built drama and dance studio, cooking in the beautiful food technology suite and conducting experiments in the wonderfully equipped Science labs.

Our community however, though is about more than bricks and mortar. It is about teacher and pupils working together, unlocking potential and inspiring pupils to do their best. It is about nurturing and developing the whole student as an individual. It is about enabling everyone to excel and to do their very best. To that end our expectations of behaviour and learning are high and we have a strong and supportive pastoral system, with rewards and sanctions. Our curriculum has a breadth of experience and challenge for everyone and running through it is creativity through the performing arts and business and enterprise, our two specialist areas. In addition pupils are enriched through a whole host of extra-curricular activities.

We are proud to be a member of the St Marylebone Teaching School Alliance and work closely with professionals across the alliance in research, professional development and leadership opportunities.  We also benefit from being part of the London Diocesan Board of Schools, a partnership which reflects our strong foundations in the Church of England.

Our vision is for all pupils to be able to excel and be supported in their learning right through from Nursery ultimately to A levels and beyond. We are delighted that you have chosen SMSJ and I look forward to welcoming you to our school.
