Performing Arts

At SMSJ we are proud of our strong tradition of Performing Arts. We know that a rich and diverse Arts programme helps students to develop self-confidence, expression and communication skills. We maximise opportunities through an innovative approach to the curriculum, particularly in PSCHEE, helping pupils explore personal, social and emotional issues through the performing arts.

All students have timetabled lessons in drama, performing arts and music. Pupils will have opportunities to play a part in assemblies, performances, concerts and at open evenings. All pupils will be able to take taster sessions during music or performing arts lessons where, for example, they will learn the keyboard or a new style of dance.

Outside lessons, all students have opportunities to take part in extra-curricular performing arts activities:

  • An annual whole-school production will allow students to become involved as a performer, musician or even as part of the backstage crew.
  • Extra-curricular bands and choirs will enable pupils to develop their performance, confidence and team work skills.
  • Parents can opt to pay for instrumental and vocal peripatetic lessons on a variety of instruments.
  • Drama club will allow pupils to develop their acting skills.
  • Our links with external arts professionals will benefit our pupils in special workshops, events, performances and industry career talks.
  • Theatre and concert trips will be organised so enable pupils to experience a wide variety of plays, musicals and concerts.

Ten per cent of our intake can opt to be a music scholar and if they are successful scholars have a weekly music lesson and take a lead in extra-curricular activities, nurturing the talent of others while becoming excellent musicians themselves. They will also organise and lead in music events.

Across the Performing Arts, we will be working in partnership with local theatre companies and professionals to inspire and to uphold the sense of professionalism required for success in the Performing Arts.
