SEND Policy

Welcome to our SEND page, providing information on the support we provide students who have Special and Additional Educational Needs or Disabilities. We hope you will enjoy reading about the variety of ways in which St Mary's and St John's School enables students with SEND to reach their full potential.

At SMSJ we are highly ambitious for every child. During their journey with us we will ensure that they are happy, safe and enjoy their learning.

We are committed to working in collaboration with families to ensure children are always given the most impactful adaptations inside and outside of the classroom. We believe every child is unique and therefore decisions about provision must be strongly influenced by student and parent perspectives.

We are committed to ensuring that all students make excellent progress and we do this through detailed analysis of student information at each data point combined with the ‘graduated approach’ to SEND (Assess, Plan, Do, Review).

Our ‘graduated approach’ always begins with Quality First Teaching but can also involve:

· In-class Adaptations for individual students

· Additional adaptations for individual students as signposted on their Learning Support Plan (LSP in Primary) or Personalised Learning Plan (PLP in Secondary)

· Providing additional small group support before and/or after school

· Additional help within the school day

· Individually or in a small group intervention, focusing on individual needs

· Access to our Inclusion Rooms or Zen-Zone during break/lunch time

· Mentoring and Peer Mentoring

· Reasonable Adjustments for Commitment to Learning

· Referral to more specialist professionals such as Autism Advisory Team, Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapist Support

Equity and equality are central to SMSJ’s approach to educating the ‘whole child’. All students with special educational needs are enabled to flourish at SMSJ by being included in every step of school life and having access to the same curriculum journey as their peers.

Where adaptations are made to a student’s programme of study, for example, during Key Stage 4, we ensure students still receive a broad and balanced curriculum.

We offer a warm, nurturing environment to all our students. Our team of staff are fully-dedicated to supporting students whatever their starting points and many of our staff have worked at the school for several years. We believe that by having excellent rapport with our students and their families we can provide students with the best possible provision.

Our provision is fully student-centred and all SEND students have an identified ’Link Worker’ who is the main link between family and the school. We are also ambitious and proactive in ensuring that all students attend school and that any barriers to attendance are effectively overcome. Further information is provided in our SEND Policy.
