Mathematics

Mathematics is essential to everyday life.  We aim for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to be able to reason and solve problems.

All children in KS1 and KS2 experience a daily maths lesson.  An important aspect of each lesson is the development of good mental arithmetic skills so every lesson begins with a ‘Mental Maths Starter’.

We follow the statutory programmes of study  as outlined in the National Curriculum.  This covers the following areas:

  • Number – which includes place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions.
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

Children are given time to practise and apply the skills that they are taught in each of the areas through problem solving and investigation.  We aim to make lessons fun and exciting where possible and include many interactive games and challenges which the children enjoy.

We encourage children, with the support of their parents, to apply knowledge and skills to real life situations such as shopping.

Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are split into two ability groups for their maths lessons.

Children in the Foundation Stage are provided with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and describing shapes, spaces, and measures.
